Charlie David has been enjoying a career filled with variety since making his name in the hit here! series Dante's Cove.

Recently Charlie's latest movie Judas Kiss, hit DVD here in the UK and proved to be something quite different from the usual LGBT output.

We caught up with Charlie to talk about the movie, discuss playing a grittier role and find out if Dante's Cove is ever coming back to our screens.

Charlie, how are you today?

I would be a brat if I complained! I’m sailing in the South Pacific around Bora Bora for ten days shooting a new episode of my travel series Bump!. http://www.bumptv.com The weather is perfect, the people are friendly and I’m heading out to feed sharks and manta rays once I finish my own breakfast.

‘Judas Kiss’ is coming to DVD here in the UK. Tell us about the movie.

Judas Kiss is about redemption and that it’s never too late to make new decisions or take a new direction with your life. That’s the miracle of being a passing passenger on this planet – each time it rotates it offers us a new beginning. This is a universal theme of the human experience and that’s why they are so relatable to an audience. We are all in a constant state of trying to better our lives, to correct past mistakes, to make wiser choices, to become better than we are. That’s also the tragedy of being human – we’re very rarely content because we’re generally living in our hope for a better future or the regrets of the past. Choosing to be grateful and present exactly where we are is the true key to bliss.

You play Zachary Wells. What do we need to know about the character?

Zachary is the most internally struggled individual I’ve played. His life has been spent in and out of rehab, he’s experienced domestic abuse, he can’t find love (since he can’t love himself). Zachary is simultaneously the protagonist and antagonist – but it’s a fight within himself.

In preparation I tried to bring myself to the role. As actors I feel we are simply instruments used to tell a story. Each actor will bring elements of themselves to a film or stage. When we watch the brilliance of Meryl Streep we’re always watching Meryl – she’s just experiencing an imagined story – and that’s what is so amazing to watch. It’s the authentic nature of being present and letting the story work through you – not layering something on top.

There were certain talents Zach has that I had to cultivate in myself – like playing the piano. Other shades like his alcohol/drug dependency or the domestic abuse are not ‘played’. They are memories that shade the tapestry of who a person is – but I don’t think you act those things if they aren’t happening in the character’s present. It shapes the psychology but most people with traumatic pasts wouldn’t go around constantly living painful memories – those are things you try to repress and lock in a box deep within yourself. Of course the monsters are always there - threatening to tear out of the box.

The role is quite different from what we’ve seen from you previously. Were you consciously trying to do something a bit grittier?

I look for opportunities to learn and to communicate something to my soul. There are many roles that we do as actors because it’s work. Just like someone at an office job – there’s a lot of paper pushing you aren’t necessarily inspired by – and then every once in a while a project comes along that truly excites you. Those are wonderful but rare.

I think as an actor you have to realize you are constantly changing – I’m not the same person emotionally, spiritually or physically as I was five or ten years ago and so it’s natural that I would try to evolve in my work as well. I’ve realized I’m making the transition into Wolf-hood whether I like it or not. It comes with perks though – suddenly the college guys are very interested in dating me! I’ve made peace with my body and know it is simply a representation of me – it does not define me and so as it wrinkles, grays and sags I’ll marvel in it. Since a very early age I’ve always been friends with older people – often twice my age – and so I’ve seen through their eyes for a long time. Their guidance, support and friendship have helped me avoid so many potential pitfalls. My advice to younger people is to befriend one person at least 10 years your senior – the mutual rewards are exponential.

I think I’ll always be associated with different projects with different people. Certainly there’s a hard-core fan base for Dante’s Cove, travel enthusiasts who explore along with me on Bump! and a dedicated group of readers for my books. I’m a storyteller at heart and have explored many ways in which to practice that craft. I think it would be nice to be remembered for being someone who created a lot of LGBT films, TV and books at the cusp of it becoming largely relevant, accepted and cool.

What was the atmosphere like on set whilst you were making the movie?

Fun!! While shooting in Seattle we all stayed on campus at the University of Washington so it was like being transported back to college days. This definitely helped with my role as well in terms of a guy mysteriously travelling back in time. The whole cast and crew really came together as a family which I think is imperative to actually pulling off a film.

You’re executive producer on ‘Judas Kiss’. What does that entail?

I handle worldwide film festival bookings, negotiating and executing DVD, digital and broadcast deals internationally for all my films. When I’m producing as well I put together the business plans, investment strategy, product placement deals, hiring of crew and am more involved with other creative elements such as casting and music rights.

We hear that ‘Dante’s Cove’ is finally returning for a fourth season. What can you tell us about that?

Hmmmm… it’s been so secretive hasn’t it? Well I was in New York last week and I met with here! Network who produces that show and I think there may be some photos of me floating around the internet now reading one of the scripts while at the Hudson Hotel lounge.

We were big fans of your movie ‘Mulligans’. Do you have plans to write any more movies?

Absolutely! I’m in discussion now with a network for a new series based on my book – Shadowlands. The book is an anthology of paranormal short stories and the TV series will be like a hip new homoerotic Twilight Zone. Otherwise yes of course I have a few other feature scripts that are complete and moving into development.

How will you be spending the holidays this year?

Working!! I’m shooting episodes of Bump! in Argentina and Costa Rica through December as well as hosting a new fashion TV show in Canada called Sell Me Your Style. The project I’m most excited about though is a documentary I’m directing on HIV+ youth called Scarlet: Positive Youth. I’ve been working on it for the past 6 months and we’re nearly done. It’s the first film I’ve directed and I’ve been educated and emotionally moved day after day working on it. My goal is start the film festival circuit with it in May 2012.
